Israeli airstrikes pounded the Gaza Strip from late Tuesday into Wednesday, killing at least 100 Palestinians in what officials called the deadliest escalation since a fragile ceasefire took effect on October 10.
Gaza’s Civil Defence spokesperson reported that the strikes hammered residential homes and makeshift tents housing displaced families, claiming the lives of 35 children among the victims.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed the operations in a social media statement, asserting that they targeted “dozens of terror targets and terrorists.”
The barrage came in retaliation for an earlier attack on an Israeli military vehicle in Rafah, which killed a reservist soldier. Israeli authorities pointed the finger at Hamas, though the militant group swiftly denied any involvement.
In a separate development, Israel has prohibited the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from accessing Palestinian prisoners detained under a controversial law designating them as “unlawful combatants.”
Defence Minister Israel Katz defended the decision, citing expert evaluations that such visits could “seriously harm national security.”
According to figures from the Israel Prison Service, cited by the Israeli human rights organization HaMoked, 2,673 Palestinians were being held under this classification as of October.
