The cause for the beatification and canonization of Late Bishop Michael Ugwuja Eneja, former Bishop of Enugu Diocese, continues to captivate the faithful as more testimonies and reported miracles emerge. Bishop Eneja, born in Ibagwa Ani and ordained in 1951, served as Bishop of Enugu from 1978 until his retirement in 1996. Renowned for his deep humility, unwavering devotion, and austere lifestyle, he remains a beloved figure in the region, remembered as a man who lived his faith with extraordinary simplicity and grace.
The Catholic Church’s official process for recognizing saints, referred to as a “Cause,” typically begins five years after a candidate’s death. Bishop Eneja passed away in 2008. In 2013, Enugu Diocese formally launched his cause, appointing Rev. Fr. Michael Chime as Postulator. After completing specialized studies in Rome, Fr. Chime, alongside a canonical board of enquiry, began compiling testimonies and investigating Bishop Eneja’s life of heroic virtue. A Nihil Obstat has already been granted by the Vatican—indicating no objection to the cause proceeding.
The enquiry phase is now underway, gathering statements from those who knew the bishop or experienced divine intervention through his intercession. Among the testimonies is a moving account shared recently by Bishop Godfrey Igwebuike Onah of Nsukka Diocese, who revealed that a persistent gland condition healed inexplicably after he sought Bishop Eneja’s prayerful intercession. “I felt a presence I couldn’t explain,” he said, describing what he believes to be a miraculous healing. The relief was later confirmed by doctors during an overseas examination without the need for surgery.
Such accounts reflect a growing devotion to Bishop Eneja. The faithful are urged to report favors attributed to his intercession, as such testimonies are vital to advancing his cause to the next stage—beatification, which requires confirmed evidence of one miracle.
Fr. Chime emphasizes that this process belongs not only to the pastors, but to the people: “If Bishop Eneja has touched your life, now is the time to share it.” A special prayer for his beatification is being circulated, urging believers to invoke his intercession and entrust their needs to God through him.
The Church does not “make” saints—it merely recognizes those already with God. And with each testimony, prayer, and act of faith, the life of Bishop Eneja is emerging ever more clearly as one of exceptional holiness and enduring influence.
