A devastating fire completely destroyed an entire hostel building at St. Winifred Girls’ Secondary School in Ihugh late Tuesday night, school authorities confirmed. The blaze erupted while students were engaged in their night classes, but officials emphasized that no lives were lost, with only properties affected.
In a public statement released on October 29, the school which belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, described the incident as an “emergency situation” and noted that the cause remains under investigation. “To the glory of God, no lives were lost, only properties were affected,” the statement read, urging the public to keep the institution in prayers.
Following an emergency meeting on Wednesday involving the school’s Proprietor, Director, PTA Executive members, and other stakeholders, the management announced a one-week mid-term break for most students to facilitate reorganization and ensure smooth operations upon resumption.
Students are scheduled to proceed on the break starting Thursday, October 30, 2025, and return on Saturday, November 8, 2025. However, Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS 3) students not directly affected by the fire will remain on campus, as they are a graduating class preparing for external examinations. SSS 3 students impacted by the incident will join the mid-term break.
“We sincerely appreciate your understanding and support during this trying period,” the management stated in a letter to parents and guardians. “Be assured that we remain committed to doing our best to meet your expectations. Please keep us in your prayers.”
Authorities have not yet provided details on the extent of property damage or preliminary findings into the fire’s origin. The school, a prominent girls’ secondary institution, continues to prioritize student safety and academic continuity amid the setback.
