On April 7, 2025, the faithful gathered at St. Raphael the Archangel’s Parish for the solemn requiem Mass in honour of the Late Chief Peter Iroha, beloved father of Rev. Fr. Christian Iroha. The Mass was presided over by the Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Ernest Obodo, who recalled Chief Peter’s steadfast commitment to the Church and his inspiring role as a father and mentor to Fr. Christian Iroha.
In his reflection, Bishop Obodo remembered Chief Peter as a man of unwavering devotion who made sure his son—now a priest—never missed morning Mass. “He didn’t just take him to Mass,” the Bishop said, “he formed him through it. That foundation led to priesthood, and it was not by accident.”
The homily, delivered by Rev. Fr. Cornelius Ushahemba Anagbe, centered around three key reasons the Church gathers for a requiem Mass: To thank God for the life of the deceased, to pray for the repose of their soul, and to remind the living to prepare for their own death.
Fr. Cornelius explained that they were thanking God because Chief Peter Iroha lived a life worth thanking God for. He was known for three things in particular: His unwavering faith in God, demonstrated even in the naming of his first son, Christian Abraham, a name inspired by deep spiritual conviction. Secondly, his love for the Church, which he expressed consistently—even in his old age and ill health. He attended the Chrism Mass while sick, just to pray for priests, and he was overjoyed on his last birthday when a Papal greeting from the Holy Father was presented to him. Thirdly, his generosity and influence, especially as a choir master who eventually became the Regional Choir Master of the Uwani Region. All of his children also became choristers—living proof of his musical and spiritual legacy. He was a homemade catechist and teacher who left a mark on everyone who came in contact with him.
Fr. Cornelius also noted that since Chief Peter’s passing, many good things have happened—an indication that he lived a holy and impactful life.
On the second point, Fr. Cornelius emphasized the importance of prayer, buttressing that no tears can bring him back; rather, what they owe him now is prayers—unceasing prayers—for the repose of his soul, for God’s mercy, and for his eternal rest in heaven.
Lastly, he urged all present to reflect on their own mortality, he made them understand that death is inevitable and the gathering is a reminder that everyone will die, and they do not know who is next. Therefore, they must live good Christian lives, seek repentance, and prepare their souls before it is too late.
In the vote of thanks presented by Rev. Fr. Christian Iroha on behalf of his family, he gave a moving tribute to his father, emphasizing the impact he had on them: “He made daily Mass the price for our morning food. He didn’t just take me to Mass—he made sure I never missed it. That discipline formed me to be the priest I am today.”
He thanked God for the gift of his father, highlighting that his father knew God, lived for Him, and died in Him.
He expressed sincere gratitude to the Catholic Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga and his Auxiliary Most Rev. Ernest Obodo, for their constant support and Love. He also expressed gratitude to Very Rev. Msgr. Godfrey Aguigwo (Vicar General), Very Rev. Fr. Albert Ikpenwa (Rector of Bigard) and his formators, Fr. Stan Zeowa (Dean of Agnani deanery), Fr. Victor Ubaka (Dean of Agu-buowa deanery) Fr. Anthony Ude( Chaplain, Government house) Rev. Fr. Stanislaus Onodugo(Rector of Nsude), Fr. Anthony Aneke, Fr. Donatus Ọnụigbo, Fr. Cyrilnus Ozoagu (Parish Priest of St. Raphael), Fr. Usha, and all other priests who attended.
He also acknowledged the Ohaofia Development Union, Araceli Aid Foundation and Academy, the Angelic Choir, Diamond Group, Ebony Youth, and the team of doctors led by Dr. Chike, for their love and support. He thanked his family, his mother, and all who stood by them.
“He needs our prayers, not our tears,” he concluded.
Bishop Obodo concluded by affirming that there are no accidents with God, pointing out that Fr. Christian’s vocation is a fruit of the faithful upbringing he received. He also mentioned that most of the people gathered, including himself, were there because of the life and witness of Chief Peter Iroha. “If you identify with God in a Christian family, He will never abandon you.” He said.
May the soul of Chief Peter Iroha rest in the peace of Christ, and may his legacy live on through the lives he touched.
