On the occasion of the 99th World Mission Day, which will be celebrated on Sunday, October 19, under the theme “Missionaries of Hope among all Peoples,” the Vatican’s news agency Fides released new statistics offering an overview of the global Catholic Church based on data from 2023.
Global Catholic Population: According to the report, the world population reached 7.91 billion, showing growth across all continents, including Europe. The number of Catholics increased by 15.88 million compared to the previous year.
Africa recorded the highest growth, adding 8.31 million Catholics. The Americas followed with 5.67 million, Asia gained 954,000, Europe added 740,000, and Oceania grew by 210,000.
Catholics now represent 17.8% of the global population—an increase of 0.1% from the previous year.
Bishops and Clergy: The total number of bishops worldwide rose by 77, bringing the total to 5,430. Among them are 4,258 diocesan bishops and 1,172 bishops from religious orders.
However, the number of priests continues to decline. Fides reports a decrease of 734, leaving 406,996 priests globally.
Europe saw the largest drop (–2,486), followed by the Americas (–800) and Oceania (–44).
Africa and Asia recorded growths of +1,451 and +1,145 priests respectively.
There are now 278,742 diocesan priests (–429) and 128,254 religious order priests (–305).
Meanwhile, the number of permanent deacons increased to 51,433, mainly due to growth in the Americas (+1,257) and Oceania (+57). Slight declines were noted in Asia (–1), Africa (–3), and Europe (–27).
The number of male religious who are not priests decreased by 736, totaling 48,748, while female religious also declined to 589,423 (–9,805).
Growth was recorded in Africa (+1,804) and Asia (+46),
Declines occurred in Europe (–7,338), the Americas (–4,066), and Oceania (–251).
Seminarians:;The number of major seminarians (diocesan and religious) fell to 106,495 from 108,481 the previous year, with Africa being the only continent to record an increase (+383).
Minor seminarians also declined slightly to 95,021, a drop of 140, including a small decrease in Africa (–90).
Education and Charitable Services
The Catholic Church continues to play a major role in education and charity worldwide. Fides reported the following institutions under Church administration:
74,550 kindergartens serving 7.64 million children
102,455 primary schools with 36.2 million students
52,085 secondary schools with 20.7 million students
2.69 million students in higher education institutions
4.47 million students in Catholic universities
In the healthcare and social services sector, the Church operates 103,951 institutions, including:
5,377 hospitals and 13,895 dispensaries
504 leper colonies
15,566 homes for the elderly, chronically ill, or disabled
10,858 daycare centers
10,827 marriage counseling centers
3,147 educational or reintegration centers, and
5,184 other charitable institutions
Data on the total population and baptized Catholics were updated as of June 30, 2023, while all other figures reflect statistics as of December 31, 2023.
