Bishop Onaga Officiates Wedding Mass of Immediate Past CYON President at Sacred Heart Parish Akpugo

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Akpugo, was filled with joy on Tuesday 6 January 2026, as Anthony Eji and Rosemary Ani, joined in Holy Matrimony, with the Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Callistus Valentine Onaga, presiding over the Holy Mass.

The Holy Mass commenced with the Bishop formally introducing the couple, Anthony Eji and Rosemary Ani, to the congregation as family members, clergy, religious, and faithful gathered to witness the sacramental union.

The Liturgy of the Word featured a personal touch, as the groom, Anthony Eji, proclaimed the First Reading.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Augustine Otugo, former Diocesan Vicar for Youths, spoke extensively on the meaning of marriage in the Catholic Church, describing it as a sacred covenant established by God and not merely a social or cultural arrangement. He explained that Catholic marriage is a lifelong union between a man and a woman, rooted in love, faithfulness, sacrifice, and openness to God’s plan.

He reminded the couple that marriage calls them to reflect God’s love through mutual respect, forgiveness, and commitment, even in moments of difficulty. Emphasizing hope, he urged them to always place God at the center of their home, noting that a marriage founded on prayer and trust in God will endure trials and flourish.

Following the homily, Anthony Eji and Rosemary Ani were invited to come forward to the altar for the celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony. Bishop Onaga led the rite. The couple held hands as the Bishop questioned them on their free consent and intentions.

The exchange of rings followed as a visible sign of their covenant and commitment to one another.

At the conclusion of the Mass, the vote of thanks was delivered by the Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Akpugo, Rev. Fr. Victor Ogbozor, who expressed deep gratitude to the Bishop, concelebrating priests, and all who contributed to the success of the wedding celebration.

In a remarkable gesture of generosity, Rev. Fr. Victor Ogbozor, on behalf of the parish, announced a gift of two million Naira to the newly married couple, in gratitude for the commitment and sacrifices of Mr. Anthony in the parish.
