It was a day etched in gold in the hearts of the faithful of St. Joseph Parish, Omughu, Obelagu Umana, as the Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Ernest Obodo, paid a historic pastoral visit on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, to dedicate the parish church and bless the Grotto of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, generously donated by Mr. Chibuike Okechi.
From the early hours of the day, the parish premises came alive with songs of praise, white attires of children dressed for confirmation, and the joyful faces of parishioners and guests who gathered to witness what many described as “a dream fulfilled.” The dedication of a church is always a rare and sacred event, and for the Omughu community, it was a moment of deep spiritual significance and thanksgiving.
In his homily, Bishop Obodo delivered a message on the meaning of church dedication. He reminded the faithful that a dedicated church is a place set apart exclusively for the worship of God, and therefore those who gather there must themselves strive to live as people set apart for God in the world.
According to him, “The beauty of this building must be reflected in the beauty of your lives. A dedicated church calls for dedicated Christians.” His words challenged the congregation to see the dedication not only as the consecration of a building, but also as a call to personal holiness.
One of the high points of the celebration was the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation to about 100 candidates, who were anointed and strengthened with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The joy on the faces of the newly confirmed and their families added colour and warmth to the already vibrant celebration.
The blessing of the Grotto of Our Lady of Perpetual Help followed, drawing deep devotion from the faithful. The grotto, donated by Mr. Chibuike Okechi, stands as a lasting testament of faith, gratitude, and Marian devotion in the parish. Many parishioners stood in prayer as the Bishop blessed the grotto, committing their families and intentions to the loving intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The celebration was graced by the presence of several priests and dignitaries, including Rev. Fr. Victor Ubaka, Dean of Aguobuowa Deanery; Msgr. Ferdinand Okpalaibekwe; Fr. Mike Onoh, former Parish Priest; Fr. Iloafor Emmanuel, their own son and Fr. Anthony Ikeche from South Africa, among others.
The wider Omughu community also turned out in large numbers. The Omughu General Assembly, led by Mr. Christian Ọkaibe, was fully represented. Other notable attendees included Sir and Lady Ibe, Hon. Nkiruka Nkwoagu, Deputy Chairman of Ezeagu Local Government Area; Mrs. Philomena Anagboso, Director CWO Aguobuowa; Director CWO Nkwo Nike; and Mr. Crescent Nnaji, President General of Omughu Town. Their presence reflected the strong bond between the Church and the community.
In his vote of thanks, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Akachukwu Anthony, expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for the success of the day and to Bishop Obodo for honouring the parish with his pastoral presence. He thanked all the priests, religious, parishioners, donors, and well-wishers who contributed in one way or another to the completion of the church and the success of the celebration. He paid special tribute to Mr. Chibuike Okechi for his generosity in donating the Marian grotto.
As the final hymns were sung and the Bishop departed, there was a deep sense of fulfillment in the air. For the people of St. Joseph Parish, Omughu, the day was more than a ceremony—it was a powerful reminder that God truly dwells among His people, and that when a community walks in faith and unity, great things are made possible.
