The 2025 Enugu Diocesan Music Festival commenced with a solemn Mass celebrated by the Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu Diocese, His Lordship Most Rev. Ernest Obodo, at the Holy Family Arena, Holy Ghost Cathedral Enugu.
The first reading from the Book of Isaiah highlighted God’s promise of comfort and restoration, assuring His people that even amid hardship, He remains with them, providing blessings, abundance, and peace. The Gospel reading from Matthew emphasized Jesus’ compassionate ministry, proclaiming the Good News, healing the sick, and calling His disciples to share in His mission.
In the homily, the Bishop reflected on how Jesus’ mission mirrors the call of musicians in the Church: just as Christ healed, taught, and inspired, musicians use their gifts to uplift hearts, bring joy, and proclaim God’s Kingdom. He further reminded the people of St. Augustine’s words: “He who sings well, prays twice.”
Following the Mass, Rev. Fr. Dr. Basil Okeke, Chairman Enugu Diocesan Music Commission, delivered a note of appreciation to attendees and expressed special gratitude to the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. C.V.C. Onaga, for initiating and sponsoring the event, as well as to Auxiliary Bishop Obodo for his presence. He also thanked the diocesan Chancellor Very Rev. Fr. Wilfred Agubuchie for his presence, the Deans of the Deaneries, both those present and those unable to attend, for their contributions to the success of the event and all priests present. The Mass concluded on a joyful note, ushering in the Music Fiesta proper.
The Fiesta featured the formal ushering of distinguished guests, including Mrs. Princess Ubochi, wife of the former Enugu State Speaker, the former Chairman Enugu East LGA, Hon Livinus Anike amongst others. It was followed by the breaking of kola nuts and lively musical performances.
Choirs from Ogui Region, Uwani Region, Ngwo Region, Emene Deanery, Udi deanery, Agbani deanary, Nkwo-Nike deanery, and Aguobuowa Deanery, as well as the newly formed Enugu Diocesan Choir and Bigard Memorial Seminary Orchestra delivered soul-stirring renditions that lifted the hearts of all attendees in praise.
Cash gifts were presented to participating regions and deaneries by Fr. Basil Okeke. Cultural dances by Aguobuowa Deanery, the installation of Patrons and Patronesses, and the presentation of awards of recognition to all deaneries in attendance added further festivity to the event.
The Diocesan Choir closed the performances with more beautiful melodies, after which attendees enjoyed a communal meal. The Enugu Diocesan Music Commission Chairman gave the vote of thanks, appreciating all participants and organizers, and the event concluded with a closing prayer past 4 p.m.
The 2025 Music Fiesta of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu was a remarkable celebration of faith, music, and community, emphasizing on the Jubilee year of hope, leaving participants inspired and spiritually uplifted.
