International singer Michael Bublé has openly reaffirmed his Catholic faith after unexpectedly performing Schubert’s Ave Maria during a Holy See press conference ahead of his appearance for Pope Leo XIV.
The moment, captured in a viral video shared by EWTN Vatican, shows Bublé offering what he described as “a little rehearsal before I have to go out and sing,” ahead of his performance at the sixth Vatican Concert for the Poor on December 6. Pope Leo personally requested that he sing Ave Maria at the event — a hymn he admitted he has performed only once before.
Speaking to reporters, Bublé reflected on his deep love for music and its spiritual significance, saying he believes “music is a gift from God.”
“When I hear music, I hear the voice of God,” he said, describing himself as a “lifelong Catholic.” He added that performing for those who suffer is meaningful because “suffering brings you closer to God.”
Bublé emphasized that taking part in the Vatican Concert for the Poor is “an honor,” noting that his Catholic faith remains a central part of his life. “It’s a beautiful part of my life,” he said. “There’s something beautiful about knowing you’re part of spreading the faith.”
In a further interview with EWTN Vatican, the Canadian singer expressed a desire to encourage young people who may be hesitant to openly share their beliefs.
“When you say you have strong faith, it can be shocking to people,” he said. “My hope is that someone young, someone afraid to share their faith, looks at me and says, ‘Look at Bublé — he’s not afraid.’ And maybe it gives them the strength to do the same.”
