The Holy See has expressed satisfaction at the civil recognition of Bishop Emeritus Joseph Zhang Weizhu of the Apostolic Prefecture of Xinxiang, calling it a significant development in Church–state relations in mainland China.
In a statement on Saturday, Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, described the decision by Chinese authorities as “an important step in the communal journey of ecclesiastical circumscription,” adding that the measure reflects ongoing dialogue between the Holy See and the government of the People’s Republic of China.
The announcement comes one day after the episcopal ordination of Bishop Francis Li Jianlin, who was appointed on 11 August 2025 by Pope Leo XIV to lead the Apostolic Prefecture of Xinxiang. His appointment was made within the framework of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and China.
Bishop Li’s ordination follows the acceptance of the resignation of Bishop Zhang Weizhu from pastoral governance. Bishop Zhang, long regarded as a steadfast figure within the local Church, now receives official civil recognition as Bishop Emeritus— a move seen as reinforcing cooperation on ecclesial matters.
The Holy See has reiterated its commitment to dialogue aimed at supporting the life and mission of the Catholic community in China.
