Pope Leo XIV Urges Lebanese Leaders to Be “Artifacts of Peace”

“Blessed are those who work for peace!” were the first words Pope Leo XIV addressed to civil authorities, representatives of civil society, and the diplomatic corps during his meeting at the Presidential Palace in Baabda, Lebanon.

Following his arrival at Beirut-Hariri International Airport and private meetings with President Joseph Khalil Aoun, National Assembly Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and their families, the Pope dedicated his speech to the importance of being “artifacts of peace” amid complex, conflicting, and uncertain circumstances—both in Lebanon and across the world.

Pope Leo XIV emphasized that peace is not merely an ideal but a daily commitment, calling on leaders and citizens alike to work toward reconciliation, dialogue, and hope even in challenging times.
