Pope Leo XIV Meets Turkey’s Head of Religious Affairs in Ankara

In a historic visit to Ankara, Pope Leon XIV met with Safi Arpaguş, the President of Religious Affairs, to discuss matters of faith and interreligious dialogue. The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), established in 1924, oversees religious matters in Turkey, promoting the teachings and practices of Sunni Islam. The agency was created to succeed the Ottoman Shaykh al-Islam following the abolition of the Caliphate and operates under the office of the Turkish President.
