Rev. Fr. Patrick Ozonweke (Esq.), a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, celebrated his recent Call to the Nigerian Bar with a special novelty basketball match titled “From Gown to Dunk.”
The event took place at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC) basketball court and featured a friendly game between Priest Ballers—comprising priests from the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province—and the UNEC Ballers.
Fr. Ozonweke, who was ordained on December 10, 2016, by the Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. C.V.C. Onaga, said his journey into the legal profession was motivated by the pastoral need for priest-lawyers in the diocese and his desire to defend the oppressed, in line with Christ’s mission in Luke 4:18–19.
Following the bishop’s call for volunteer priests, he began his legal studies at the University of Nigeria in 2017, earning an LL.B. in 2023.
He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Agbani Campus, where he completed his vocational training and was called to the Bar on September 23, 2025.
Explaining the inspiration behind the basketball match, Fr. Ozonweke described basketball as a long-standing passion dating back to his minor seminary days. He has participated in several competitions, including the Milo Basketball Championship (2004), various seminary games, and the UNEC Vice-Chancellor’s Cup (2019 and 2022).
He emphasized that sports play a vital role in maintaining physical and spiritual well-being, echoing St. Irenaeus’ saying that “the glory of God is man fully alive.”
According to him, basketball also serves as a tool for evangelization and witness, demonstrating that priests engage in wholesome recreation while using teamwork on the court to mirror collaboration in the mission of Christ.
Fr. Ozonweke expressed deep gratitude to the Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. C.V.C. Onaga, for the opportunity to pursue legal studies, and to the Auxiliary Bishop, Most Rev. A.E. Obodo, as well as his brother priests for their support throughout his journey.
The novelty match added a lively and inspiring tone to his milestone achievement, blending faith, sportsmanship, and professional accomplishment.
