Dr. Edwin, the first priest to be inducted as a medical doctor in the Catholic Diocese of Enugu. His journey, marked by sacrifice, faith, sleepless nights, and an unwavering commitment to service, serves as an inspiration not only to young seminarians and aspiring doctors, but to all who dare to chase challenging dreams.
In this exclusive interview, Fr. Edwin shares insights into his unique path from childhood dreams to the consulting room, how he balanced the demands of the seminary and medical school, and his vision for compassionate, faith-driven healthcare.

The Choice Flame: Father, congratulations! How does it feel to be the first medical doctor-priest in Enugu Diocese?
Fr. Edwin: I feel awesome with a heart filled with gratitude to God who made it possible and to my Bishop Most Rev. C.V.C. Onaga who gave me the opportunity.
The Choice Flame: What inspired you to study medicine, even as a priest?
Fr. Edwin: I have always desired to venture into medicine. From a 9-year-old boy who was helping out in his dad’s Patent Medicine Store at Ugwuagor, to a boy in JSS 1, who worked as the school infirmarian until after 200 level Philosophy. I believe God has been nurturing me for this.
The Choice Flame: How did you balance priestly duties, and medical studies?
Fr. Edwin: It was not really easy. Like my Bishop will say, “your duty as a Priest comes first before any other thing.” So, more sacrifices needed to be made so as not to be found wanting in any of the ends.
The Choice Flame: Were there moments when the journey felt too tough? What kept you going?
Fr. Edwin: Yes. In fact, I suffered insomnia for some weeks after I finished. Medical School is on another level of experience. But the grace of God and the urge fulfil a dream combined with the responsibility bequeathed on me by the Diocese kept me going.
The Choice Flame: How do you hope to combine your priesthood and medical practice for the good of the people?
Fr. Edwin: As a Priest, I have to bring in mission into the practice of medicine, which is compassion in medical practice. As such, within my limits, I will give my best for the good of the people of God.
The Choice Flame: What message do you have for young people who are afraid to follow difficult dreams?
Fr. Edwin: Like I teach my kids during children’s mass, “never say it is difficult rather say it is doable.” Believe in the God who gave His name as I AM to Moses, that He will go with you. And you will be shocked that the iron padlock you dreaded was never locked even.
The Choice Flame: Looking ahead, what are your plans or vision as a priest and doctor?
Fr. Edwin: A perfect health care delivery to the people. A health care system that people will have faith in.
The Choice Flame: During medical school, what was your daily routine like — balancing studies, prayer, and rest, parish work?
Fr. Edwin: I ensured I fulfilled all my Pastoral duties including teaching catechism and infant baptism. And also ensured not to miss any of my lectures. Then night classes in school because I read better in school than my room.
The Choice Flame: Was there a particular Bible verse or saint that gave you strength during the tough times?
Fr. Edwin: Yes. Isaiah 41:13. I so love that verse
The Choice Flame: What was your favorite subject in medical school — and your most challenging one?
Fr. Edwin: Well, I love all the subjects but Surgery is always direct and I enjoy it. Pediatrics was a bit challenging because it demanded more attention.
The Choice Flame: How did your classmates react when they found out you were a priest?
Fr. Edwin: They were all surprised but I had to blend with them so that they can feel comfortable around me.
The Choice Flame: After all the long nights of study, how did you celebrate your induction day?
Fr. Edwin: I never planned to celebrate. But my two families; my immediate family and the Priests insisted. They asked that I be present that they just want to celebrate God’s goodness in my life.
The Choice Flame: If you weren’t a priest or a doctor, what else could you see yourself doing?
Fr. Edwin: A teacher. I so enjoy teaching a lot. Even my Sunday masses with the children we use board.
The Choice Flame: What do you do to relax — any hobbies, music, or sports you enjoy?
Fr. Edwin: I listen to music precisely RnB. And then I also enjoy watching football and playing games with my phone.
