Blessing and Commissioning of Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital, Enugu, and the Visit of Mr. Peter Obi to the University Teaching Hospital

It was a joyous moment today, Tuesday, 6 May 2025, at Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital, Enugu (formerly Ntasi Obi Hospital), as the Teaching Hospital was officially blessed and commissioned by the Proprietor, Most Rev. C.V.C . Onaga, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, after it was granted approval to have a College of Medicine for Medicine and Surgery as well as Nursing Sciences. This epic event was also colored by the visit of the former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of GO-Uni, Rev. Fr. Prof. Dr. Christian Anieke, on behalf of the Senate, staff, and students of the university, welcomed His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, to the university and the Teaching Hospital. “Your Excellency, your visit is part of the unbroken narrative of your continuous support of Godfrey Okoye University from the beginning of its existence as an approved university in the academic space of Nigerian universities,” he noted. The VC also stated that Mr. Peter Obi was the first Governor to identify with the university, donated a coaster bus to them and had delivered many public lectures in the university too. He thanked him for his unwavering support to the university since its inception in 2009.

The Bishop also thanked Mr. Peter Obi for making out time to visit the University Teaching Hospital and for supporting it despite his tight schedules. The bishop reiterated Mr. Obi’s commitment to seeing Nigeria work and his support to the humanitarian efforts of the church. He prayed that his dream of Nigeria would come true and assured him of his prayers and those of the students. He also advised the students to be diligent in their studies and to always think of what to do for the other person. He noted that “doctors are next to God because they preserve life and care for it.”

Mr. Peter Obi expressed gratitude to the church for taking up the long-abandoned task of the government in providing affordable medical care to the populace. He noted that, “since politicians have abandoned governance and turned it into a crime scene, the result is that the Church has stepped up to cater for the health needs of the people. Those who do not work—the politicians—are being catered for while those who are working are left out. But this criminality must be dismantled.” He assured the University of his continuous support and urged the students to take their studies seriously because by 2030 there will be millions of shortages of nurses globally. He made a donation to the teaching hospital.
