Life of the Saints

Today’s Saint: St. Julie Billiart

Saint Julie Billiart (1751-1816) was a French nun and educator who founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Born in Cuvilly, France, Julie experienced a tumultuous childhood marked by poverty and illness. Despite these challenges, she developed a strong faith and sense of purpose.
Julie’s vocation to education and service began at a young age. She started teaching catechism to local children and eventually opened her own school. During the French Revolution, Julie continued to teach and minister to the poor, despite persecution and danger.
In 1804, Julie founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, a congregation dedicated to education and service. The order quickly grew, establishing schools and ministries throughout France and beyond.
Julie Billiart was canonized a saint in 1969. Her legacy as a pioneering educator and advocate for the poor continues to inspire people around the world. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur remain a vibrant and active congregation, carrying on Julie’s mission of education, service, and compassion.
