St. Hugh was a 12th-century bishop and abbot who played a significant role in the Catholic Church. Born around 1135 in Avalon, France, Hugh was raised in a devout family and received his early education at the monastery of Villard-Benoît.
Hugh joined the Carthusian Order and became a monk at the Grande Chartreuse monastery in France. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the procurator of the monastery and later its prior.
In 1180, Hugh was appointed as the Bishop of Lincoln, England, by King Henry II. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to promote the welfare of his diocese, establishing schools, hospitals, and monasteries.
St. Hugh was known for his kindness, compassion, and generosity. He was particularly devoted to the poor and the sick, and his episcopal residence was often filled with guests seeking his assistance.
Hugh died on November 16, 1200, and was canonized as a saint in 1220. His feast day is celebrated on November 17. He is often depicted with a swan, which became his symbol due to a legend that a swan would follow him wherever he went.
