Saint Maria Josefa of the Heart of Jesus was a Spanish nun who devoted her life to caring for the sick and the poor. Born in 1842 in Vitoria, Spain, she was raised in a family that instilled in her a deep sense of piety and compassion. From a young age, Maria Josefa felt a strong calling to serve others. Despite facing health issues and initial setbacks, she persevered in her pursuit of a life dedicated to serving God and humanity. In 1871, Maria Josefa founded the Servants of Jesus of Charity, a congregation of nuns committed to providing care and support to those in need. Under her guidance, the congregation flourished, establishing numerous houses and caring for countless individuals. Maria Josefa’s spirituality was rooted in her profound love for the Eucharist, the Sacred Heart, and the mystery of Redemption. She believed that serving others was an essential aspect of living a life of faith and that fraternal charity was a fundamental principle of Christian living. Throughout her life, Maria Josefa remained committed to her mission, inspiring countless others to follow in her footsteps. Today, her legacy lives on through the Servants of Jesus of Charity, who continue to provide care and support to those in need around the world. Maria Josefa’s remarkable life of service and devotion earned her recognition as a saint. She was beatified in 1992 and canonized in 2000, with her feast day celebrated on March 20.
