Blessed John of Parma (1209-1289) was an Italian Franciscan friar, theologian, and the seventh Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor.
John was born in Parma, Italy, around 1209. Little is known about his early life, but it’s believed that he came from a noble family. John studied at the University of Parma and later at the University of Bologna, where he earned a degree in theology.
In 1233, John joined the Franciscan Order, founded by Saint Francis of Assisi. He was drawn to the order’s emphasis on poverty, simplicity, and service to others. John’s intellectual abilities and spiritual dedication quickly earned him recognition within the order.
In 1247, John was elected as the seventh Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, succeeding Brother Crescentius. During his tenure, John worked tirelessly to promote the Franciscan ideals, resolve conflicts within the order, and defend the order against external criticisms.
John was a respected theologian and writer. He authored several works, including commentaries on the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation. His writings focused on the importance of living a simple, poverty-stricken life, and the need for spiritual renewal within the Church.
John resigned as Minister General in 1257 and spent the remainder of his life in prayer, study, and writing. He died on March 19, 1289, in Camerino, Italy. John’s reputation for holiness and his contributions to the Franciscan Order earned him beatification in 1777.
Blessed John of Parma’s feast day is celebrated on March 19. He is venerated by the Franciscan Order and the Catholic Church, which recognizes him as a model of humility, simplicity, and dedication to the Gospel.
