Life of the Saints

Today’s Saint: Saint Cyril of Jerusalem

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem was born around 315 AD in Jerusalem, during the reign of Emperor Constantine. He came from a Christian family and received a solid education in theology, philosophy, and Rhetoric. He was ordained as a priest by Bishop Maximus of Jerusalem, and later, around 350 AD, he succeeded Maximus as the Bishop of Jerusalem. As bishop, Cyril played a crucial role in the theological controversies of his time, particularly in the debates surrounding the nature of Christ.

Saint Cyril was a strong advocate for the orthodox faith, and his theological writings had a significant impact on the development of Christian doctrine. He was a key figure in the Council of Nicaea (325 AD) and the Council of Constantinople (381 AD), where he helped shape the Nicene Creed.

One of his most enduring legacies is his series of catechetical lectures, which provide valuable insights into the theology and practices of the early Christian Church. These lectures, known as the “Catecheses,” cover topics such as baptism, the Eucharist, and the nature of God.

He faced opposition from the Arian party, which led to his exile from Jerusalem in 357 AD. He spent several years in exile, during which time he continued to write and teach. Cyril was eventually restored to his see in 360 AD and remained bishop until his death around 386 AD.

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem is revered as a Doctor of the Church, and his writings have had a profound impact on Christian theology and practice. His feast day is celebrated on March 18th in the Western Christian tradition.

Prayer: Saint Cyril, you were a loving shepherd and a firm defender of the Truth of the divinity of Christ. You never wavered in your mission, not even during persecution and exile, but proclaimed Christ Jesus to your flock. Please pray for me, that I will always remain firm in my faith, especially when challenged by a hostile world, and will lovingly proclaim the truth to those who need it most. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, pray for me. Jesus, I trust in You.
