The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Valentine Onaga on a pastoral visit to St. Joseph Parish, Emene today, 23rd February 2025 blessed and dedicated the new church building of the parish (Ofuobi Parish).
The dedication ceremony began with a holy mass presided by Most Rev. Calistus Onaga, joined by Most Rev. Anthony .O. Gbuji, Bishop Emeritus of Enugu; Very Rev. Fr. Wilfred Agubuchie, Diocesan Chancellor; Very Rev. Fr. Osita Victor Ezé, Dean of Emene Deanery; past parish priests; and numerous other priests.
In his homily, Bishop Onaga emphasized the importance of forgiveness, tolerance, and reconciliation in the Christian life. He reminded the faithful that the church is a gathering of God’s people and a canopy of God’s love. He praised the parishioners for their doggedness, tireless efforts and determination in completing the church building, which lasted from 2010 to 2025.
Bishop Onaga urged the faithful to love their enemies, pray for those who persecute them, and allow God to fight their battles. He emphasized the importance of forgiveness, saying, “Practice the virtues of forgiveness, tolerance, for practice makes permanent.” He also reminded the faithful to “do unto others what you would want done to you.”
The bishop thanked Bishop Gbuji for his special role in establishing and completing the church, including his financial support, advice, and commitment.
His Lordship also administered the sacrament of confirmation to hundreds of candidates.
His Lordship was highly received by the Parish Priest, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Ojiogu, parish vicar Fr. Victor Okejah, alongside the parish pastoral council as well as the faithful in the parish.
Dr. Sir Ogbonna Innocent C, KSJI, gave a vote of thanks, thanking all present for witnessing the epoch-making event. He especially thanked Bishop Gbuji for his contributions to the church, especially in raising finances for the foundation and its gallery.
The dedication ceremony marked a significant milestone in the history of St. Joseph Parish, Emene, and was a testament to the faith and perseverance of the parishioners. It was a day of joy and fulfillment for the people who saw their hope of a befitting place of worship for the Lord, fulfilled in before their own eyes. It was a song of nunc dimitis!
