The Catholic Diocese of Enugu today commemorated the anniversary of the rededication of the Holy Ghost Cathedral today, marking it as a sacrosanct day in the diocesan calendar. This special Mass, presided over by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, drew many clergies, religious, and faithful who gathered to honor the legacy of their mother church.
The Holy Ghost Cathedral, which stands as a spiritual and historical cornerstone for Catholics in the diocese, was initially rededicated on November 3, 2012, after extensive renovations. In his address, Bishop Onaga reminded congregants of the significance of the day, emphasizing that the celebration is not solely for a parish church but for the heart of the Diocese itself. “We ask God to protect this Cathedral and those who worship here,” he said. “This building is a beacon of faith for us all.”
In a homily that moved many, Bishop Onaga spoke on the theme, “Love as the Only Commandment of God.” Reflecting on the book of Mark, he reminded congregants that love is central to Christianity. When the scribes asked Jesus, “Which is the greatest of all commandments?” Jesus responded by underscoring two: to love God wholeheartedly and to love one’s neighbor as oneself.
“Christianity is about preaching love!” the Bishop proclaimed. “Above all, love your neighbor as yourself. Love is the greatest commandment; every other is merely an extension or an addition.”
Bishop Onaga’s words struck at the heart of what it means to live as a Christian in today’s complex world. He challenged the faithful to embrace love not just as a duty, but as the very essence of their faith, urging them to see love as a source of strength in times of adversity. “By loving God,” he continued, “we honor Him. And by honoring Him in our places of worship, we demonstrate reverence for His presence.”
The Holy Ghost Cathedral’s journey from its initial dedication to today’s anniversary is rooted deeply in the history of the Diocese itself. Established as an autonomous jurisdiction in 1962, the Diocese was carved out from the Archdiocese of Onitsha. Decades later the Cathedral underwent a significant transformation, including a gift of a new roof from the then Governor Sullivan Chime, which served as a critical element in the renovation. This reconstruction, Bishop Onaga recalled, underscored the need for rededication, a fresh blessing on a site so vital to the community’s spiritual life.
The rededication of the Cathedral symbolized renewal and a deepened commitment to the faith, sparking the tradition of celebrating November 3rd each year in remembrance. One interesting feature marking a dedicated church is the presence of twelve candles placed on its walls, representing the 12 apostles and symbolizing the light of faith that shines out to the world. “These twelve candles,” Bishop Onaga explained, “are not just a reminder of the apostles but a call for us to be a light to all.”
Also, Bishop Onaga reflected on the nature of love as a perpetual springtime for those who follow God. “It is always springtime in the heart that loves God,” he said. “Our love for God brings us joy, no matter the season.” He urged the faithful to remember that everything they have comes from God, encouraging them to express gratitude through their worship and actions.
The Bishop’s homily also reinforced the enduring message that love is not merely an abstract commandment but the foundational principle upon which all other teachings are built. “It is only when you love God,” he emphasized, “that you realize that everything you have comes from Him.” Through love, he noted, believers recognize the boundless generosity of God’s love for humanity.
As Enugu Catholic community celebrates this special day, Bishop Onaga’s message of faith, reverence, and love resonated deeply, offering both encouragement and a profound reminder of the Church’s mission to be a light in a complex world.
