Catholic Diocese of Enugu Celebrates Easter Vigil Mass, Emphasizes Significance of Resurrection

By Chikezie Ogbonna

In a solemn Easter vigil mass, the Catholic Diocese of Enugu joined millions of Christians worldwide in commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. His Lordship, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, delivered a soul searching message centered on the theme “If there was no resurrection,” underscoring the profound importance of Easter in the Christian belief system.

Addressing the faithful, Bishop Onaga emphasized that Easter remains the epicenter of the Christian faith, transcending mere observance of the crucifixion to embody the essence of resurrection. He emphasized that Jesus Christ, having risen from the dead, is perpetually present among his followers, lending depth and significance to the narrative of his birth, suffering, and ultimate sacrifice.

Reflecting on the implications of a world without resurrection, Bishop Onaga contended that Christianity itself would cease to exist, plunging humanity into darkness devoid of hope and meaning. He asserted that the Gospel would lose its essence without the reality of resurrection, rendering the concept of hope illusory.

Drawing parallels between the resurrection of Christ and the concept of hope, Most Rev. Onaga underscored the transformative power of belief in a better tomorrow, urging leaders to uphold this vision and address the challenges facing society. He implored leaders to emulate the compassion and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, guiding them to empathize with the struggles of the common man and strive for a brighter future.

He urged all individuals, regardless of their roles, to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, embodying principles of selflessness and compassion in their endeavors.

As the Easter vigil came to an end, the faithful departed with renewed faith and hope, inspired by the timeless message of resurrection and redemption as espoused by His Lordship.
