Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital Officially Launches Maternal and Child Care Unit

In a landmark event, the Maternal and Child Care Unit of Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital was officially commissioned and inaugurated today, marking a significant milestone for the healthcare institution. The Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, proudly announced that the unit is now operational and ready to serve pregnant mothers and their children, providing specialized care at a subsidized cost.

The Maternal and Child Care Unit is hailed as one of the best in any Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, according to Prof Anieke. The launch ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including the honorary Chief Medical Director, Prof CU Nwadinigwe, who expressed his enthusiasm for the hospital’s growth. He noted that Godfrey Okoye University is on the verge of making history as one of the fastest-growing private universities in Nigeria.

The establishment of the medical school at the university, as highlighted by Prof Nwadinigwe, comes with numerous positive impacts, including specialized health services, manpower training, and relevant health research. The transformation of Ntasiobi Hospital into a teaching hospital demonstrates the institution’s commitment to expanding healthcare services.

Prof Nwadinigwe revealed plans to initiate housemanship and internship programs for medical and nursing graduates, respectively. These programs aim to provide middle-level manpower and enhance the hospital’s national visibility. The chief Medical Director emphasized the need for an accident and emergency unit and hostel blocks in preparation for mandatory accreditation visits and clinical rotations by medical students.

Acknowledging the support received, Prof Nwadinigwe expressed gratitude to Rev Fr Dr Matthew Nwafor, Hon. Dr. Samuel Ngwu, and Rev. Monsignor Prof. Obiora Ike for their contributions and encouraged other philanthropists to emulate their generosity.

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Hon Mrs Ngozi Valentina Enih, lauded the occasion, highlighting the hospital’s role in providing comprehensive maternal care. She urged the hospital to maintain high standards and humane treatment of staff, pledging government support for the institution.

Hon Felix Nnamani, Commissioner for Water Resources, and Chairman Enugu East LGA, Livinus Nze Anike, commended the university for its achievements and assured governmental support. Prof Michael Okorie of ESUTH commended the university’s Vice Chancellor for his unwavering commitment, while Ezinne Juliet Ani and Lolo Kate Ezeoffor conveyed congratulations and advocated for continued support and a partnership for Igbo language teaching in the school.

The launch event also featured awareness talks on cervical cancer, natural family planning, and cancer screening, emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to community health education. The Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital is poised for a promising future, building on its strategic location and dedication to advancing healthcare in the region.
