- Auxiliary Bishop Stresses the Importance of Unity and Struggle for a Better Nigeria
In a jubilant and grand celebration, the Heart of Jesus and Mary Parish, Alulu marked its 10th anniversary on October 1st, 2023. The event also saw the first episcopal visit of the Most Rev. Ernest Obodo, Auxiliary Bishop to the Parish. The day was filled with significant events, including the groundbreaking ceremony for a new church building, the confirmation of 300 candidates, and the blessing of a grotto dedicated to Our Lady.
During his homily, Bishop Obodo emphasized the significance of having a motherly figure in our lives, drawing parallels with the role of Mary, the mother of God. He urged the congregation never to lose hope in Nigeria and emphasized the importance of unity and perseverance in the face of challenges.
Bishop Obodo remarked, “As long as we can work together and remain steadfast in our efforts, we can save this country. We must not give in to intimidation by oppressors and must continue to amplify our voices in the fight for the soul of our nation.”
He stressed the need for patience and perseverance in addressing the challenges facing Nigeria and discouraged the “japa syndrome” of seeking refuge abroad. Instead, he called for collective efforts to fix the country.
“Running away isn’t the answer,” Bishop Obodo declared. “We must address our issues head-on, with the help of God, to create a new nation.”
The bishop also pointed out the prevalence of superstition in the country and urged Nigerians to focus on peace, justice, and productivity while working towards national greatness. He criticized greed among leaders and their use of ethnicity and religion to divide the country for personal gain.
Addressing disunity among the Igbo community, Bishop Obodo called for unity and collaboration in pursuit of development. He stressed that the responsibility of saving Nigeria lies with Nigerians and that collective action is essential to avert impending danger.
In conclusion, Bishop Obodo invoked the biblical story of Joseph and Mary being warned by an angel to escape to Egypt with their child Jesus, emphasizing that Nigerians must rise above challenges to save the nation.
He called on all citizens to reject tribalism, nepotism, and religious bigotry, and work collectively to prevent the country from sliding into a state of moral and educational decay.
The 10th-anniversary celebration of Heart of Jesus and Mary Parish was not only a religious milestone but also an occasion for reflection on the future of Nigeria, with Bishop Obodo’s words serving as a rallying call for unity and progress
