Godfrey Okoye University set for 2020/2021 academic session

Arrangements have been concluded by the management of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu for the commencement of the 2020/2021 academic session. Already admissions into the various faculties in the university have commenced while examinations for the second semester of the 2019/2020 examinations will commence this month.

The Director of Academic Planning and Services of the University, Sister Professor Dr. MarySylvia Nwachukwu who announced this while addressing pressmen in Enugu said that COVID-19 had changed the mindscape of education in Nigeria, stressing that things will not be the same again.

In an answer to a question, the Manager ICT of the university, Mr. Chinedu Chibuzor said that the website of the institution is universally visible while its online presence is strong.

“The university’s examinations are tracked while codes have been introduced to check malpractices and solve problems associated with internet services” Mr. Chibuzor stated.

On his part the Director General Studies Division, Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Professor Chidi Uhuegbu advised Federal and State governments to provide internet and E-learning facilities in all tertiary institutions in the country to check the challenge posed by the corona virus pandemic to education.

The Director, who is a Professor of Physics also called for improvement in electricity supply to ensure effective use of E-learning facilities and expressed regrets that the pandemic had exposed the deficiencies of the government in all sectors of the economy.

“The adoption and implementation of E-learning by Godfrey Okoye University Enugu is a huge success, virtually all the students and staff of the university had keyed into the electronic method of teaching and learning” the Director remarked.

Professor Uhuegbu urged parents to encourage their children in schools and universities to adopt the E-learning as a convenient way of studying and provide them with the required facilities.

Speaking of the benefits of the E-learning method adopted by the university to ensure that the students of the university graduate on schedule, the Dean, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, Dr. Sergius Ude said the innovation had distinguished Godfrey Okoye University as an outstanding university that can stand the test of time and urged those that seek for quality and uninterrupted system of education to join the university and its group of institutions.

Dr. Udeh who said that all the teaching and non teaching staff of the faculty of Management and Social Sciences have been trained on the operations of the facilities available for E-learning, described the new method as very effective in monitoring the students’ commitments to studies and examinations.

In reaction to the restrictions in activities during the period of the Corona virus pandemic the Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Environmental Studies, Associate Professor Marian Unachukwu announced that the pandemic had led to new ways of academic activities.

According to Professor Mrs. Unachukwu, she observed that parents appreciate the E-learning introduced by the university as the students are kept busy always with academic activities, “the students are successfully carrying out their second semester academic activities while mid-semester examinations have concluded”.

“The faculty had commenced mass production of hand sanitizers invented by the faculty, Professor Mrs. Unachukwu said.

The Dean suggested that a period of spaced physical examination should be introduced if the pandemic persist, stressing that students whose parents are resident in the Enugu metropolis could be allowed to attend lectures from their houses while those whose parents live in distant places could be allowed to stay in the hostels and advised Nigerians to learn to stay at home and obey the guidelines on the pandemics so as to check the spread of the disease.

On the activities of the newly established Godfrey Okoye University Enugu Nanny and Continuing Education Center, the Coordinator of the center, Dr. Mrs. Blessing Anukaenyi announced that over fifty persons are participating in the programmes of the Center.

The center which commenced academic activities in November 2019 offers a Nine months course on generic and pediatric care as well as Home management.

“The students include graduates, undergraduates, and retired officials who are grouped into full and part-time programmes of the center, Dr. Mrs. Anukaenyi explained.

The Coordinator who described the center as one of its kind in Nigeria said it also offers courses in such foreign languages as French, Chinese and German while the national languages taught at the center include Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba, and identified the inability of some students to acquire and operate smart phones, poor internet connections and electricity as some of the challenges of the programme during the period of lockdown.
