Beyond the Virus

Our health care system has over the years been faced with reckless abandonment. The ruling class never deemed it fit to see that we have a well equipped hospital with affordable health care for all, no matter your social stratification.

COVID-19 has again exposed the truth about our country and has laid bare the faulty lines of years of sustained irresponsible, wicked and insensitive leadership orchestrated by our political class cut across every side of the political divide.

Beyond this virus, we should understand that good governance matters and the aftermath of bad governance will always be panic and every level of unpreparedness in the face of increasing national disaster and pressure.

So far so good, COVID-19 has shown that we should always stay prepared and in preparation pay attention to the well being of the nation and her citizens.

Countries like South Korea, Germany and many other nations operating people oriented governance free from brazen corruption are tackling this disease effectively. They function as nations well prepared for any form of outbreak. They have exercised every level of organization and discipline in fighting head on the raging virus. This shows what years of deliberate organization can achieve.

In the case of Nigeria, the reverse has always been the case. Yet again we have been caught napping. This goes beyond this virus. This goes beyond the fears of the unknown occasioned by our years of neglect on the very system that should have been prepared to handle this level of pressure.

Beyond coronavirus, the country still has many challenges raring her ugly heads, making life brutish, harsh and in many cases unbearable. The nation still has many diseases like malaria to battle, a now normal epidemic that we have to adjust to live with and perhaps because it has less impact on the elites and the ruling class, needed efforts to its successful eradication has gone into oblivion.

Beyond coronavirus, we have our lingering poverty index, a situation where the gap between the rich and the poor is increasingly widening. The nation has now been tilted towards a social stratification of extreme rich and extreme poor. However, the virus now ravaging the world knows no class and spares nobody and this is the time attention should also be paid on finding ways of helping to assist the poor as the nation brazes up for worst days ahead over our now common enemy.

The rich and well- to- do, including Organizations and Institutions should step in now to help cushion the harsh economic impact this virus will have on the people.

This gesture will not only maintain calm in the society but it will help navigate the entire population back to normalcy when the virus scare has subsided.

It is important now for everyone to understand that beyond the scourge of coronavirus, it has now become our responsibility to ensure that we help each other stem the adverse effect the virus will have both in our social life and in our  economy. As the nation fights hard to contain the spread and prevent a damaging pandemic, there is every need for us to do our own part by ensuring that prices of goods and essential commodities are not hiked, needed supplies are not hoarded, misinformation and hoax narratives are not spread and personal protective measures as advised by experts are observed to contain spread.

Beyond this virus, there is life; however, this should be served as a wakeup call to the many things we have been lackadaisical with. This could be the long awaited paradigm shift we need to begin to question everything that has kept us subjugated and start taking actions geared towards a national rebirth and salvation of the mind.

One thing is certain, the virus has humbled us all, especially our ruling class and elites and who knows, this might be the recipe for the real change which will  be developmental focused at all spheres of our existential strata.

However at the meantime, stay healthy, stay protected, observe the social distancing and take your personal hygiene serious.
