Drug abuse in Enugu, rising rapidly! – NDLEA

  • 110 arrested last year
  • 3,505,97 Kilogrammes of hard drugs seized

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Enugu State command has decried the rising case of drug abuse in Enugu.  In a press statement appraising her operational performance for the year 2019, the command stated that about 3, 505, 97 (Three Thousand Five Hundred and Five Ninety Seven) Kilogrammes of hard drugs were sized and 110 (One Hundred and Ten) persons were arrested for various drug related crimes in 2019. The command also commended the state government as well as the Nigerian Police for her effective collaboration and partnership in her quest to curb the scourge of drug abuse and drug trafficking in the state.

The statement reads;

“From January to December 2019, the Enugu State Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was able to make some meaningful arrests and seizures in the state.

“A total of One Hundred and Ten (110) suspects were arrested during the said year (2019), out of which 105 were male and 5 were female. The illicit drugs seized include: Cannabis Sativa (wee-wee), 2,490,94 Kilogrammes, while Cocaine is 79.03 grams and methamphetamine is 836 Grammes, so also Ephedrine 100 Kilogrammes was seized respectively. All these bring the grand total to 3, 505, 97 kilogrammes of drugs seized in 2019.

“In the area of conviction, the command was able to convict 69 cases at the Federal High Court, Enugu, while the rest of the cases are still ongoing. Likewise, in the area of rehabilitation, the command was able to counsel and rehabilitate 33 persons during the same year.

“The drug situation in the state is worrisome, both in prevalence and the attendant consequences. The youths are getting increasingly involved in drug abuse; hence their future growth rate and development are threatened.

“It is in realization of the enormous task of drug problem in the state that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in collaboration with the Enugu State Government embarked on aggressive drug abuse and trafficking sensitization, awareness campaign and mop-up operations in the state during the 2019 yuletide season.

“Finally, the command very much appreciates the support of the State Government towards combating the drug menace in the state, hence the resolve of Enugu State Command of NDLEA of reducing the drug scourge to the barest minimum.”
