The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, His Lordship, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga has expressed deep sadness following the discovery that the suspected killers of the Late Rev. Fr. Clement were all Catholics.
Speaking at a funeral mass organized in honor of late. Fr. Clement four months after his gruesome murder in the hands of suspected kidnappers, at St. Luke Parish, Awhum on 12th July, Bishop Onaga said he was shocked and heartbroken by the news. Having had an interaction with the suspects in Police net and hearing them recite the Ten Commandments with other revelations, His Lordship was convinced that they were Catholics.
However, the Bishop said forgiveness is of God and the Diocese will continue to trust in God for guidance. He revealed that the nightmare from the death remains indelible in the minds of many.
Late Fr. Clement was kidnapped around 9pm on 12th March, 2019 in the Presbytery of St. Mark Catholic Church, Obinofia Ndi-Uno, Ezeagu Local Government Area where he was serving as the Parish Priest. His decomposing body was however found one week after in a bush after the youths of the community summoned courage to comb the bush in search of his body after all efforts to get the kidnappers to come forth with their demand was met with stark silence.
However, the Police in a press statement on 3rd April announced the arrest of some of the suspected kidnappers connected with the crime. According to the Police, the two suspects gave their names as Sunday Chibuko, a native of Umanna Ndiagu in Ezeagu L.G.A of Enugu State, aged 32 years and Benjamin Osogwu, a native of Obollo Eke in Udenu L.G.A of Enugu State, aged 28 years. They were arrested in their hideout at Area 1 Garriki, Abuja on 28th March, 2019 by the Operatives of the Command working with intelligence information.
It will be recalled that His Lordship, Bishop Onaga once raised an alarm that the kidnap and eventual murder of Late. Fr. Clement might be a planned assassination and used the opportunity to call for decisive actions from the authorities in curbing the increasing state of insecurity in the country.
Meanwhile, more questions that beg for answers have sprang up on the intention behind the gruesome murder of Late. Fr. Clement.
Until the Police concludes its investigation and release its findings, we will only keep praying for the repose of the soul of Late Fr. Clement Ugwu.
