The Catholic Diocese of
Enugu and the entire people of Obinofia
Ndi-Uno in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State have been thrown into mourning following the brutal kidnap and murder
of the Parish Priest of St. Mark Catholic Church, Obinofia Ndi-Uno, Rev. Fr. Clement
The Priest was
kidnapped at around 9pm from The Parish House on Wednesday, 12th
March, 2019. His decomposing body was
found 20 kilometers from the Parish House on the early hours of Wednesday, 20th
March, exactly one week after his gruesome abduction.
According to eye witnesses, the Rev. Fr. Clement was shot as he struggled and tried wrestling himself from the hands of the dare devil kidnappers.
It was reported that
the suspects shot sporadically when Fr. Clement tried resisting them. Speaking with
The Choice Flame, the Ezeagu Local Government Chairman, Hon. Chukwudi Ezinwa said
there have been concerted efforts to rescue Fr. Clement Ugwu from the hands of
the criminals before his decomposing body was discovered.
The Local Government
Chairman who is a native of the community and operates from the community,
while narrating what he saw when he responded to the emergency call said he
discovered blood stains around the Parish House which led him to believe they were
from bullet wound Fr. Clement sustained from the gun shots fired by the
Continuing, Mr. Ezinwa
first raised concern that Fr. Clemet’s life might be in danger since he may
have been shot and feared that he might be unattended to with gunshot injuries.
He further assured of his determination to go down to the root of the matter to
unravel what he described as a strange development in the community.
Reports had it that youth in the community were mobilized to comb the forests and places where the kidnappers could be hiding. A woman who was going to her farm discovered the already decomposing body of Fr. Clement who obviously would have died some days after he was abducted. She reported to the Local Government Chairman who alerted Priests and the Police.
Rev. Father Clement who has been described as a man of peace and the last child of his parents was kidnapped as he returned from a meeting with his fellow Priests on that faithful day. He was however, waylaid by the suspects who apparently waited for his return before embarking on their sinister move to abduct him for a ransom. It is however not clear if his shooting was accidental while he struggled with the suspects or a deliberate act to weaken him and inflict pain on him.
Speaking at his burial service, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, His Lordship Most Rev. CVC Onaga described the gruesome murder of Late Rev. Fr. Clement as an act of wickedness gone too far. He decried the state of insecurity in the state while calling on the state government as well as the police to rise to the safety of all in the state. His Lordship further described the painful killing of Father Clement as one too many. Continuing, His Lordship wondered how the Police who claimed to have thoroughly searched the community when the news broke out that he was kidnapped could not track down the suspects. This is because the eventual discovery of his corpse was just 20 kilometers away from his home, which showed that the suspects never left the community. His Lordship who was visibly angry at this development declared that enough is enough and called on every stake holder concerned to rise to the occasion of safe guarding lives and property in Enugu State.
